Hukvaldy Lopaťáky
Sweet pastry with butter and cinnamon that smells of tradition and hospitality.
Hukvaldy Lopaťáky are traditional sweet pastries from the village of Hukvaldy, known not only for its beautiful nature and castle, but also as the birthplace of composer Leoš Janáček. Lopaťáky get their name from the large wooden shovel on which they were traditionally placed in the oven for baking.
They are flat, round cakes made from leavened dough, coated with butter and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon after baking. In the past, they were a favorite holiday pastry of local families, and today they are still baked according to original recipes, serving as a reminder of the region’s rich gastronomic tradition.
You can taste and buy them mainly at local festivals, fairs, and in some Hukvaldy bakeries or market stalls. Sweet and fragrant, Lopaťáky are a symbol of hospitality and home cooking in the Moravian-Silesian Region – ideal as a snack on a trip or a tasty souvenir from Hukvaldy.
