Štramberk Ears

A sweet legend from the 13th century, a symbol of courage and the region’s pride.

Štramberk ears are a traditional sweet delicacy from the town of Štramberk, with a history dating back to the 13th century. According to legend, the confection commemorates the victory of the local inhabitants over Tatar invaders – their shape resembles a human ear and symbolizes protection and courage. They are made from fragrant gingerbread dough with honey and spices, rolled into the characteristic cone shape.

Today, Štramberk ears have a protected designation of origin in the EU and are among the most famous regional products of the Moravian-Silesian Region. You can buy them directly in Štramberk at small bakeries or market stalls on the town square, as well as in pastry shops and stores throughout the region. Tasting this specialty is also a taste of the history, tradition, and pride of the region.

Interesting fact: Štramberk ears were the first Czech food product to receive geographical indication protection from Brussels. Producers must reside in Štramberk, have their production facilities there, and pay a license fee to the town hall. No one else is allowed to produce or sell this delicacy under that name.
